As the West Michigan Specialist in Barrier Free Homes and Universal Designed Homes, I would like to welcome you to this Site.
The entire Realm of Wheelchair accessible and Barrier Free Housing has greatly changed in the last decade. A Home no longer needs to have the visible signs of being wheelchair accessible. Also changes in technology have made it possible to be completely independent in your own home. Take the home to the left for example. It is completely Barrier Free; from the entry ways, to the bathroom and even the Kitchen; and it look from the exterior like any other home on the block.
As a Michigan Real Estate Agent who has several years of construction experience, I can see in an existing home what needs to be done to make a home barrier free, arrange the proper contractors to do the work, which in the end, makes it easier for the buyer to move right into their new home.
Universal Homes are another option for those homeowners looking forward to later life. A Universal Home is a home that is built with many of the same concepts as a barrier free home, but still appears and feels like any other home. The universal home concept was born by builders and architects who want to make it easy for the older generations to remain mobile. The features included in the Universal Home Concept are:
1.) Zero Step Entries
2.) Low Door Sills.
3.) Wider doorways and hallways
4.) Wheelchair Friendly Kitchens and Bathrooms
5.) Lowered Light Switches and Raised Outlets.
6.) Larger Garages with optional radiant floor heating.
7.) One Story Concept- All the homes features on a single floor.
A single family home is not the only solution. Many newer condominiums are built with Universal and Barrier Free Design in mind. The positive side of a condominium over a single family house is that the Condominium Association takes care of all the exterior maintenance of the property, including lawn care, snow removal and exterior building maintenance. All of these features are typically paid for in the Condominium's Monthly Fee.
